Sunday Reset #16: The Season Nobody Warned Me About

Heyyyyy boo. Let's talk.

Depending on when you're catching this, pour yourself some coffee or a mimosa. Whatever floats your boat today.

Let me tell you about a season of my life nobody warned me about.

For 30+ years, I was a mom first. I had my twins at 19. Then my daughter later. My whole life was them. Their meals, their schoolwork, their after-school pickups, their moods, their milestones, their birthdays, their heartbreaks. My days were built around them from morning to night.

Then in 2021, my daughter moved out. Last one out the door. And the house got quiet. Really quiet.

I thought I'd feel free. Everyone said I'd feel free. "Girl, your time is finally your own!"

But what I actually felt was… lost.

Because when you spend three decades pouring yourself into raising human beings, and then they leave to build their own lives, you're supposed to just… what? Pick up where you left off in your 20s? What if you don't even remember who that person was?

I raised them to leave. That was the whole point. And I did a good job — they left, they're building beautiful lives.

And I was still sitting there wondering what to do with myself.

For a while, I told myself I was just tired. Just adjusting. Just resting.

The truth is I was grieving.

Grieving the identity that had defined me for 30 years. Grieving the version of myself who was needed daily. Grieving the mother-role that was suddenly not needed the same way anymore.

Here's what I've learned:

Empty nest isn't just quiet. It's an invitation.

An invitation to become someone your kids never knew.

Not "mom" as your whole identity. Not the version of you that existed for them. But a whole new person. The one you've been quietly becoming while nobody was watching.

That's how Now Carry On was born.

Not because I finally had "extra time." But because I finally had space to hear myself.

This week…

If your kids are grown, you're allowed to grieve the mother-you.

Then you're allowed to become someone new.

Your kids don't need you to shrink back into who you were before them.

They need you to keep growing while they grow.

It's never too late to become someone even YOU haven't met yet.

The house is quiet now.

But my life is finally loud in a way it's never been.

Now Carry On 🖤
